The Agricultural University of Iceland was founded in
January 1, 2005, by a fusion between the Hvanneyri Agricultural University,
The Agricultural Research Institute and Reykir Horticultural College. The
new university has 130 employees and approximately 300 students. It has three
departments, Department of Environmental Sciences, Department of Agricultural
Production and Department of Continuing Education and Diploma Programs. The
University offers five different BS programs and several diploma programs.
The BS programs are given in Agriculture, Natural history, Natural Resources, Land
Reclamation and Forestry, and Landscape Architecture and Planning. MS education
is planned on individual basis for each student. The major emphasis for the
Agricultural University of Iceland in research and teaching is basic natural
sciences with special emphasis on Icelandic nature and environment and sustainable
land use including all terrestrial natural resources.
Department of Continuing Education offers wide range of courses with
over 900 students each year. (NB. Population in Iceland is total 290.570 with
21.109 in rural area and the number of farms in the country is 3.286). |
